Executive Coaching

There are many coaches and coaching organisations. Coaching is an unregulated profession, meaning that anyone can call him/herself a coach.

There have been attempts at self regulation through professional bodies like the European Mentoring and Coaching Council (EMCC) which places emphasis on ethical practice, continuing professional development and supervision of coaches.

These professional bodies have done much to raise the status and professionalism of those practicing within the field.

There are many different definitions of coaching which perhaps reflects the diversity of approaches adopted by coaches in their practice and the importance of the relational connection between coach and client in facilitating hoped for outcomes.

My own approach to coaching is underpinned by a postgraduate senior practitioner level coaching training for those already qualified as counsellors and psychotherapists, my experience of professional and business environments and as a leader and by a theory of how the mind develops through my clinical training and practice as a psychotherapist.

What can you expect from Coaching with me?

I view coaching as an intervention that will help you identify and take the action required for you to achieve a desired and defined goal or objective, through increased self awareness, learning and responsibility.

By working with me to identify blind spots and behaviours for change and to challenge thinking and perceptions you can expand your thinking and range of responses to develop effective strategies for overcoming obstacles, maintain changes and increase your awareness of the choices available to you.

The coaching setting offers a space where new behaviours, thinking and ideas can be explored, experimented with and evaluated with me in a neutral and confidential setting.

What can be addressed in Coaching?

Individual coaching can be directed at diverse aims and objectives from increasing artistic output to developing leadership ability.

Deciding what is going to be worked on is of core importance in the coaching process – even for those who come with fully formed views about what it is they want to work on. For it is important to think about why any expressed aim or objective is going to be of benefit. If there is no benefit – why do it? If the benefit is insufficient why will you invest in the work?

I think about what can be worked on in coaching in terms of areas of individual personal growth, change or development in variable contexts, for example:

•    Existing or future challenges
•    Transitional situations – new roles or responsibilities
•    Leadership challenges and developing leadership capabilities
•    Improving personal performance in whatever sphere  
•    Developing capabilities
•    Improving interpersonal relationships
•    Decision making

What happens in Coaching?

Typically a coaching assignment for an individual will consist of 6-8 sessions over an 8 to 10 month period. Sessions last between 2 – 3 hours.

This allows sufficient time and space to decide what to work on and why it would be beneficial to do so; explore how the objective is to be achieved and what might need to be changed to achieve it. The work entails a process of learning - to increase self awareness, challenge existing ideas, thinking and beliefs and experimenting with what has been noticed and learned.

My approach to coaching aims to help develop resilience, agency and autonomy that will help you maintain changes, meet new challenges with confidence and become more aware of available choices.

Why work with a Coach

Coaching offers you a unique opportunity to step out of your usual environment for a few hours and step into a setting that allows the type of thought, reflection and experimentation that simply is not available in a work or personal context.

In this setting – away from work and personal life – you can say what you think and express ideas and thoughts outside the constraints of these environments. In this setting, challenge to thoughts and ideas may be more easily experienced by you and in this way you can be encouraged to expand your thinking.

I believe coaching outside the physical working or personal environments emphasises the distinction in settings, though I appreciate sometimes this is not always possible.

Starting Coaching

I start the coaching process with an assessment meeting. An assessment meeting allows us to decide whether you could benefit from coaching with me.  

At this meeting you will have the opportunity of telling me about what you might want to work on, finding out more about how coaching may be of benefit and understanding more about what to expect. Importantly it allows you to meet me and decide whether you think you could work with me. It allows me to think about how we might work together and to put forward a proposal based on your individual circumstances.
